Founded according to ancient chronicles by the hermit *Pu Chao Phra Tung*, Chiang Tung is celebrated in Lanna folklore under the poetic formula: "3 Hills, 7 Towns, 9 Lakes, and 12 City Gates" (3 จอม 7 เชียง 9 หนอง 12 ประตูเมือง).
Historic Sights & Heritage Exploration:
1. Phra That Chom Kham (พระธาตุจอมคำ):
Perched majestically on Chom Kham hill overlooking the entire valley, this gilded stupa stands over 220 feet tall and is said to enshrine sacred hair relics of Gautama Buddha. It serves as the primary spiritual guardian of the Tai Khün people.
2. The Ancient City Walls & Pa Daeng Gate (Red Gate):
Of the original 12 historic brick gates that once defended the walled royal city from Burmese, Chinese, and Siamese incursions, Pratu Pa Daeng and Pratu Chiang Ngam remain remarkably preserved, showcasing ancient defensive masonry.
3. The Giant Dipterocarpus Heritage Tree (ต้นหมายเมือง):
Towering atop Chom Sak hill, this colossal sacred tree planted over 250 years ago serves as the living geographic marker of Kengtung. From its base, you can enjoy panoramic 360-degree vistas across the entire mountain basin.
